OWS: Beyond Zuccotti Park

For the first time last night, I heard someone say “Holding on to, and maintaining, Zuccotti Park, is taking up all the energy of the organizers.”

Winter is here. It is becoming very difficult to stay overnight in the park.

The success of the movement has attracted hustlers and provocateurs. On Day 40, when rain had driven people to the church and there were only 2 “peacekeepers” at the site, two very aggro men used that opportunity to try to start a fight over each other’s signs (“you got to take that sign down”). The police watched and did nothing. When I left the peacekeepers were still calming them down. Read more…

OWS: Winter is coming

OWS. Day 41.

This afternoon, there was intense rain. Although the tents stayed up, most people decamped to a nearby church, as well as the public atrium at 60 Wall Street. By 9, temperatures had dropped to 38. Someone said, “there may be snow tomorrow”. Read more…

OWS: Against sexual harassment, against rape

The media reported an alleged rape at Occupy Cleveland and now a Crown Heights man arrested for sexual assault at Zuccotti Park.

This is one of the weaknesses of the “leaderless, horizontal” structure, and people need to STOP making a fetish out of the “everyone is a leader” meme. You need leadership to prevent this from happening, and to take swift action and to have the person arrested and to respond to the mayor and media.

It’s absolutely crucial that OWS come out with a condemnation of this in the STRONGEST possible terms, and take steps to ensure that all OWS sites be gender and race safe spaces.

Zero tolerance for any form of sexual harassment.

OWS: Are the drummers provocateurs?

From Claire Pentecost: Re the drummers, i am reminded of Benjamin: ” Fascism sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance to express themselves. The masses have a right to change property relations; Fascism seeks to give them an expression while preserving property.”
The opportunity for self expression has become the logic of most of our capture devices. among the things from which we must liberate ourselves, we should consider the injunction to express ourselves.

From Jason Jones (Monday):¬†We’re in serious need of bodies here. The drumming will happen daily from 12-2 and 4-6pm, that’s ok. But that means that we need folks in these shifts:

2-4pm people here to make sure drumming doesn’t start during this quiet slot
5:45pm – 8pm ppl here to make sure drumming stops at 6pm sharp and doesn’t start again
8pm – 10pm ppl here to make sure drumming doesn’t start
